Scary Movies

My lovely roommate and I have been watching more scary movies. She never really watched any when she was younger, so now is a great time to force her to sit down and enjoy them with me! I say force, but she enjoys it really. Our most recent watches were The People Under the Stairs and Hush. The People Under the Stairs is a classic more of a thriller type movie. I’ve never seen it myself and that made the experience more interesting. Hush is a Netflix movie about a deaf woman getting fucked with by a murderer.

Now, I have to address it, I went into the People Under the Stairs expecting something like the Hills Have Eyes kind of horror. We watched that movie with a friend of ours who did say it’s more of a thriller. I just didn’t really process that and expected to be on the edge of my seat scared. The characters were interesting, and if you haven’t seen it, the main antagonists are beyond weird, it was great. The protagonists are just kids but they’re awesome. I loved watching them just try and escape everything going on.
There were definitely some parts that really just threw us off. Little spoiler – We see one of the villain’s in a full leather “gimp suit” at one point and that was bizarre. When he came into frame wearing that we all just freaked out.
All in all, great movie and I’m glad this movie was recommended to us.

Hush was amazing! Our protagonist is a deaf, ass kicking, and resourceful woman who has her night just ruined by this murderer dude. Being a sadistic and all around just terrible guy, he decides to mess with her. All night he’s just tormenting her. Playing with the fact the audience can hear but she can’t was super neat. The ending kicked so much ass and I will one hundred percent recommend this to horror lovers.
I was recently talking to a friend about this movie, and he was telling me this is by the guy who did the Haunting on Hill House series which makes sense. It was amazing and now I know this director does more amazing work.

Even with the two different styles of movie, it was a good night! But that’s all I have for today. Thanks for stopping by and be safe out there!

Some New Tunes

On the second I pre-ordered a CD, I know, a CD, but hear me out, for Ninja Sex Party. They’re signed and everything and I am SO EXCITED!!! I had the chance to see them live in England but I’m not talking about that yet… The album goes live in about two weeks and I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for new music.

Their YouTube channel has one of the new songs on it “Thunder and Lightning“. When they shared the song, the one band member Brian tweeted – “Hi, I used to be a professor of theoretical physics. Please enjoy this new song of mine about my friend’s superpowered testicles.” – I love everything about this band and am just so excited over their new album!

Don’t talk about England… You’ll get embarrassed Deryn… You were overtired and stressed and… Just don’t… So there’s a fun story about seeing NSP last year… I say fun, I was so devastated when it happened and haven’t put it on the internet yet. We were in the middle of watching the two opening bands, TWRP and Planet Booty (great names I know), and I had almost no phone battery left. Our train was going to be there for like, 22:00 and was the last train back to Chesterfield. Because I had no idea what time it was, and that we were in a different country, I just got super sad and left to make sure I wasn’t late. We flew for thirteen hours over an ocean to see that show, and friends but still, only to NOT MAKE IT! Was I mess for like three days? Yes. Do I still not like talking about it? Also yes. Is that going to stop me from putting this on the internet? I wish…

Long story short, I’m trash at planning. But, now that it’s been a year, there’s new music! Oh I am so excited! Next time they go on tour, I am going to over plan the whole trip because I am not missing this again.

Look at them <3

When the CD comes in, I’m going to have to buy a shadow box to display it inside my cabinet. You can be guaranteed when it’s on Spotify that’s all I’ll be listening to. But anyway, that’s all I’ve got for today! Be safe out there!

Working the Night Shift

I was very bored between calls on my most recent shift. Working from six to six overnight, not a lot happens. While I had nothing to do, I decided I was going to watch some movies. Were they all zombie movies? Hell yeah they were! Today I may drop a spoiler or two, just fair warning.

Train to Busan was first on my list. A Korean zombie movie that came out in 2016. I’ve read some amazing reviews recently about it and figured I’d have to watch it. And let me just say, I’m glad I did!

The early parts of the film do an amazing job at showing us the characters we’re going to be following and their personalities. I, unfortunately, don’t speak Korean, so I never actually learned their names, but that honestly didn’t take away from the movie at all. The style of “zombie” gave me World War Z vibes, as in more of an “infected” than an actual zombie.

The characters were so amazing written and really believable considering the circumstances they were all thrusted into. By the end I was so invested in their safety, at one point I paused the movie to message a friend about how scared I was so the little girl. Even though the whole real cast in on the train, you still get to see a while group of people that would walk past you in your everyday life. It’s really neat how everyone worked around each other.

As for the zombies, they were so dang cool! They were fast and had just enough intelligence that no matter where they were, they were always a threat. A particular scene in the movie with our dead friends just blew my mind: our living passengers were getting on what I assumed was they train again, and the dead have just overrun the train station. After enough pressure just from the overwhelming force of the dead pressing on the glass, a window breaks. Watching a hundred “dead” people fall out of a window, onto the train, and the ground below, only to get back up and start running, was so cool! I was so amazed by the effects, and by the fear that I thought I knew before.

The ending of Busan left me in tears and I loved every second of it, from the banter between characters, to the fear of the inevitable that was thrown at my face over and over again. I recommend this one hundred percent to any zombie / horror fan.

After that, I watched Quarantine for the first time. That was an okay movie, but not one I’d watch again. I found myself skipping through the movie. The ending was super neat though! The actors did a good job, but I’m going to watch the movie it’s based on next time I get the chance. Which I believe is called REC.

My last movie I watched was the first Resident Evil. That movie is still super fun. For a movie based on a video game, it’s well done. It’s too bad that series went so, action. Can I totally quote all of the Red Queen lines too? Maybe, definitely. I would watch this movie whenever I’m looking for something fun to watch. Maybe if I watch these movies through, I’ll have the courage to play the games…

And then the Resident Evil poster

I know this was mostly a praise post for Busan, but that movie was just so good. But anyway, that’s all I have for today. Be safe out there and we’ll talk soon!

I finally did it. I finally picked up Dune. We’re going to give this a shot guys, here we go!
I can’t do it. The writing is too much for my brain. I reread the first paragraph four times and I just, I can’t. I’m not going to give up on it though, so my next option would be audio book then I guess. I’ve never actually listened to an audio book before, so this introduction is weird. I dig it though. Okay, here we go!

Dune in Audible

This is much easier to listen to than to read. I’m only about twenty minutes in, but it’s easy to follow and I can see myself getting really into this. The character we’re following has a good amount of intrigue, hopefully he doesn’t lose that over this novel. I got an idea, I have the book, why don’t I try and follow along? Cool okay, so this is a great idea! The narrator reads at a good pace, and being able to see what he’s saying, frick I feel smart right now.

Our main character, at least who I think is anyway, is finally starting to do “main character things” and the story is starting to go. I’m excited, there’s a good amount of tension without feeling like I’m going to burn out before the next chapter. My real gripe right now, his name is Paul. Every other name of anything or anyone has been so, not English, but Paul. This narrator says “room” like “rum” and I’m here for it.

Well, I’m through the first chapter now, and holy frick. That was intense! There’s so much about this universe that you get to see right away, and yet there’s still so much the reader has no idea about! I can one hundred percent see myself getting the whole series. This is definitely going into my “favourite reads”. And I’m only one chapter in! If you haven’t yet, go watch the trailer for the new movie(s) that are coming out soon. There’s a scene where it looks like one character has his hand stuck in a box, and that’s chapter one!

The cover of Dune

I’m so glad I gave this book another chance, and I’m hoping to get a decent way through it today! If work isn’t too busy, I’ll make it through at least a few more chapters. I’m about half way through chapter two and I don’t want to put it down. I’ll probably be posting updates on Twitter for the next little while. Want to read it before the movie comes out?

But that’s all I have for today, mostly because I’m going to continue reading it. Thanks for stopping by, and be safe out there!

Supporting Friends

I have a few friends who also do the “online” thing that I do. Some stream, others art, and I even know a couple who take the time to edit YouTube videos. I love all of them, and am hoping that stuff like this can help them just that extra little bit to continue kicking ass. I can’t really split them up into any real sections as that just wouldn’t work, so here they are.

First off, my buddy Dominic. He’s an entertaining streamer, and sometimes let’s me kick his ass at Fall Guys. His twitch is the best place to find him. Come November he’ll be almost exclusively playing Destiny 2’s new expansion. All the dog walking posts with Taz, this guy is his owner / dad.

Next lovely human, my dear friend Sophia. A brilliant artist who occasionally streams and making YouTube videos. Her twitter is definitely more alive than I feel right now. As of when this post goes live, her commissions are open too, go check them out! I own a lot of her stuff now and am one hundred percent a HUGE fan of hers.

Looking back, all of these lovely people were first introduced to me during my EB Games years. Kat and I never directly worked with each other (I don’t think anyway), but we bonded in that store for sure. Kat is a writer, witch, artist, and all around just an amazing soul. Her twitter is a good place to catch her latest updates! Through there she has links to her Facebook and Instagram.

A couple years ago I got to see Evanescence in Washington with a friend of mine Ian. An interesting guy who I’ve known since I was a kid, he’s now a published author! I bought a copy of his book, but my ADHD forgot until literally right now. Don’t be like me, go check that out! Now that I’ve remembered, I’m going to grab that book and give it a read.

Look at my friends doing cool stuff! I’m so proud of them all! Go check them all out! And we’ll talk again soon!
